More of what I have been reading lately… Paulo Coelho

Truth be told I have slowed down on my reading lately… perhaps over the summer I went on reading over load… In fact I really cannot even remember what order I read any of them! One thing is for sure every book has literally changed my life!!! I actually think that I read each one of these books at an appointed time, a time where I was ready to recieve the message. I tell my friends that if the book doesnt jump out to you and call you; then dont worry about it maybe it’s not time to read it. Perhaps you came across this post for the same reason, maybe one of the books below will call out to you, if so I hope you follow your intution to read it because if read any of the following books with any amount of understanding, they WILL change your life for the better.

First up The Alchemist The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho– As some of you may know I wrote about reading my first Coelho book back in March (By The River Piedra I Sat Down And Wept), which to this day is one of my all time favorite books!! I mean wow, what an intoroduction to this amazingly  expressive writer whom uncovers spiritual truths in the most universal and approcahable ways. With that said, I knew that I had to read his most famous book The Alchemist. True, it is one of those books that EVERY one should read simply because its mainstream popularity… one should always try to know the books that are so widely referenced to. But beyond that, I found that I came to this book at a time in my life when I needed to be reminded to set aside my fear of the unknown. The Alchemist reminded me that we all have a journey into the unknown towards our greatest hopes, a knowing that weighs on our very souls, a dream, a “personal legend” that we must all seek, despite our own fears and reservations. This book reminded me that, and even this very moment, alerts me to remember that, we all can be tempted to stop and rest when we are on that journey, thinking that perhaps the small successes and comfortable living is enough. But to not be deceived, that even that is still a far cry from the larger reward that awaits us after the long and faithful journey. Months later after reading it, I try to reflect on the lessons that The Alchemist teaches… it being such a quick and insightful read I might have to read it every few months now that I think about! If the above sparks your interest or if you find you are afraid of taking on a commitment to a long awaited dream; read the Alchemist to spark your hope and optimism, you will definitely find your yourself inspired yet again.

Naturally after reading two amazing books by Coelho I wanted to read more, next I came across The Valkyries by Paulo Coelho, although this book has MANY spiritual lessons, this book is quite different from the first two, in that this book Coelho is telling a story from what he says are all his own very personal real life experiences. Once I read that he says that everything in the book actaully happend to him, I was like ok wow this dude doesn’t play around when it comes to the supernatural! From angels to witches and rituals in the middle of the desert, you might be be wondering what you got yourself into! In the end, I realized that it was time to start to push the boundaries of my own spiritual asking… perhaps I do have angels and guides that walk with me? Perhaps in acknowledging them,  I really should start to refer to them personally, asking for help and direction? Coelho doesnt stop there, not only does he bare his soul, he lays out his thoughts about his wife, marriage and monogamy, giving insight to what men really think when their relationship is hanging in the balance. One thing is for sure, Coelho has no no qualms about letting it all out, he is very intimate with his readers in everything that he writes; and I believe it is that kind of vulnerability that has allowed him to become one of the most influential authors of our time.

Although I have read other books in between, in staying with the list of Coelho books that I read this summer, his last book I read was  The Fifth Mountain,  a fictional story about the biblical prophet Elijah. Although most may know the story of Elijah from the bible, Coelho, tells this story from the relatable viewpoint of what any human being would be thinking in Elijah’s situation, a veiw point rarely so candidly shared in the bible. Although this was probably my least favorite book of his so far, I have to say that this was one of the first books I have ever read that actually had me shrieking out loud wondering what would happen next! Even as my least favorite of his books, it was the kind of book that at times, I literally didn’t want to put down until I knew what was going to happen next! If you have read the story of Elijah or have interest in the prophets, I highly recommend this book. Further more, if you have ever felt that God has called on you at any point in your life, this story will certainly help you to feel that you are not alone in your thoughts and reservations to go the other way. Even though I didnt take to this book like the others The Fifth Mountain STILL makes me tear up! Cant be too bad if it did all that! In fact, Im staring to think that all his books are a must read for any one who is on the path less taken, seeking their destiny.

I have some more thoughts on about 8 more books that I read recently but in realizing that its now 4:30am in the morning… I will keep this post to this nice list of Coelho reads… PLEASE  SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS WITH ME! I WOULD LOVE TO KNOW WHAT COELHO BOOKS YOU ARE READING AND WHAT YOU THOUGHT OF THE ABOVE 🙂

GOOD NIGHT/MORNING! oh yeah and MERRY CHRISTMAS

Books that change your life

On top of working a magazine, going to school(graduate in May!!), modeling and acting… I also spend a nice slice of time reading. And I have been fortunate enough to read 3 books in row in the past month, that have changed my life. Although I may be a little late, as most of these books are international bestsellers Im so happy that I have read these book at the time that I have. I have owned these books for years, and never took the time; which confirms that some messages are only revealed when we are ready to receive them. So in the order that I have read them, here are the 3 books and a few quotes from their lift changing revelations….

Maya Angelou

“Each of us has the right and the responsibility to assess the roads which lie ahead, and those over which we have traveled, and if the future road looms ominous or unpromising, and the roads back uninviting, then we need to gather our resolve and, carrying only the necessary baggage, step off that road into another direction. If the new choice is also unpalatable, without embarrassment, we must be ready to change that as well.”
— Maya Angelou (Wouldn’t Take Nothing for My Journey Now)

“I realize that living well is an art which can be developed. Of course, you will need the basic talents to build upon: They are a love of life and ability to take great pleasure from small offerings, an assurance that the world owes you nothing and that every gift is exactly that, a gift.”

— Maya Angelou (Wouldn’t Take Nothing for My Journey Now)

Don Miguel Ruiz

“Everything is God”

The only reason you are happy is because you choose to be happy. Happiness is a choice, and so is suffering”

“The dream you are living is your creation. It is your perception of reality that you can change at any time”

Attention is the ability we have to discriminate and to focus only on that which we want to perceive.”

“Nothing other people do is because of you. It is because of themselves”

“Real love is accepting other people the way they are without trying to change them”

“Your life is the manifestation of your dream; it is an art. You can change your life anytime if you aren’t enjoying the dream.”

“Forgiveness is the only way to heal”

Paulo Coelho

“You have to take risks. We will only understand the miracles of life fully when we allow the unexpected to happen.”

“In real life, love has to be possible. Even if it is not returned right away, love can only survive when the hope exists that you will be able to win over the person you desire”

“The universe always helps us fight for our dreams no matter how foolish they may be. Our dreams are our own, and only we know the effort required to keep them alive.”

“But love is always new. Regardless of whether we love once, twice or a dozen times in our life, we always face a brand-new situation. Love can consign us to hell or to paradise, but it always takes us somewhere. We simply have to accept it, because it is what nourishes our existence. If we reject it, we die of hunger, because we lack courage to stretch out a hand and pluck the fruit from the branches of the tree of life. We have to take love where we find it, even if it means hours, days, weeks of disappointments and sadness.”

Perhaps these quotes do these works of ART some justice, but you must read yourself to gather their true meaning to you. Art inspires but art is also subject to interpretation… take part in art whenever you are given the chance, because it is asking you to, and you will always walk away with something!
