I am a subscriber to the Refinery29.com email newsletter, so naturally when I saw that I was featured on the blog in the beauty section I was soooo happy! Funny thing is I was so happy that day, I was totally in the zone. At home, before I went out for the shows at Milk Studios I told myself that I was intent on being completely myself. Fashion week can get so serious and competitive so I knew that to feel and look my best I would just BE ME! BIG HAIR and all!! And to my pleasant surprise this belief was solidified by a beautiful mention on Refinery! Check it!
I must admit I never get tired of watching this! Project Runway Season 8 was the opening show for Lincoln Center and the energy was very high and exciting! I will never forget my walk down the runway that day, as it was a very magical moment unlike any other time before! What was even better was that this was the final step to winning with my amazing designer Gretchen Jones! Hope you enjoy this flashback!! Oh and in case you were wondering I closed the show with Gretchen at the end starting at 9:06! 🙂
Place: Cafe Minerva
Date/Time: Wednesday 6pm
Rez? Nope, just walked up to the bar.
Yesterday, on my way to an acting class, I happened to pass by the well loved west village cafe, Cafe Minerva. This is the kind of place you would see in a great romance film, the kind of place you would imagine running into your future love. The music upbeat, air fresh and savory, laid back yet dressed up enough for a first date or for inspiring a a first novel. The patrons attractive and diverse, lots of artists and mostly locals.
I had heard of this place before but had never been, but you could never tell, as soon as I walked in a friendly bartender/barista welcomed me as I took a seat at the bar. Confused as to whether they served more than coffee I immediately noticed a fellow young woman sipping a glass of wine while writing in her notebook. Since I had come to do the same thing I quickly asked for whatever she was having… A $9.50 glass of the med-full bodied Marchesi di Barolo Barbera di Monferrato ’08 which I must saw was the perfect way to quell my work day nerves. Although I didn’t have time to grab any food. I can say the vibe alone was enough to come back again and again, if nothing more than for a glass of wine, engaging conversation and inspiration. Vibe, you can’t fake… a place either has a good one or not… and it’s simply something that just is… with no reason that any one can put their finger on. I ALWAYS say, its all about ambiance… if I don’t like the way it feels when I walk in (consists of lighting, style, staff, patrons, smells and all around good energy) I will leave before I even try the fare. So yes, Cafe Minerva gets an A for ambience, staff friendliness and a perfect wine recommendation for a first visit… Food, I don’t know, but I will be back soon so I will def share! Truth be told I liked this place so much, Im surprised I shared it with you guys, as I usually like to keep cute places like this to myself!! Ok so I didn’t exactly “go out to eat” at Cafe Minerva but check back, and I will be sure to share my thoughts on my food experience as well (which I am optimistic about)… in the mean time, if you have tried the food please let me know what you think! 🙂
Where: Waverly Inn
When: Wednesday Night 8:45 rez… sat at 9:30
Another day, another restaurant! Last night, I was invited to the still very famous Waverly Inn a restraunt known for it’s hard to get tables more than anything else. A staple that seems to work, as NY Magazine’s Adam Platt so beautifully put it;
It’s designed to feed patrons in a familiar, semi-competent way, without distracting from the real business at hand, which is to have a drink or two and bask in the reflected glow of each other’s glorious presence. — Adam Platt
Adam Platt put it quite well, although I did enjoy the the french fires and oysters for the apps with the sole and lovely Sancerre, I do have to say its clear people are there for the crowd and vibe first, food second. I very much over indulged in the bread throughout the meal and may have had a lilttle too much wine… so by the time the last plate was taken off the table I was full and happy.
If you happen to snag a table I would recommend a Wednesday or Thursday night and make sure you order the steak(had a bite of my friend’s) and make sure you end the meal with the yummy roasted comice pear for dessert!
Over the past year and half I have learned that my day often reflects how I started it! Lately I have been working on starting my day off right with positive intentions. In the book “The Power of Positive Thinking” by Norman Vincent Peele; he says that it is important to speak out loud with one suggested phrase being as simple as ” I believe”. He recommends that you should say this out loud three times every morning before you even move from sleeping position and continue to confidently verbalize this phrase throughout your day.
I personally have started this morning ritual while also adding the bible scripture “This is the day the Lord has made, I will rejoice and be glad in it” -Psalm 118:24 or even a phrase as simple as “Today is a new day, all things are new and anything is possible”. From there I visualize all the best outcomes that I can imagine for the day ahead. I try to take 10-15 to do this simple mediation and I PROMISE if you try it too, you will notice a HUGE difference!!
I also have to start to start my day off with coffee, good music and morning pages and some times in that order! See the YouTube link below to hear a great morning song to play to get you in the right mood/mindset; I love India.Aire and this song never fails to make me feel good about the great day to come!
AS for moning pages… morning pages may very well be for me, the greatest means to clear my head, reset my energy and get in touch with my creative and higher self. I have done a video about morning pages with Taren of the popular YouTube Channel Taren916 so I will def have to put that up. I was lucky to find morning page in the international best seller “The Artist’s Way” by Julia Cameron. To put it simply Julia suggests that to get in touch with your creative/spiritual/higher self; each morning right after waking up one should sit down to a notebook and write three pages of free flowing thoughts.
I have personally done this almost everyday for the past year and a half and WHOA has it changed my life! I sit down and just write 3 pages nonstop without interruption. For me, its really dumping all my thoughts as they come without judgement or fear of what will be said or realized. It doesn’t matter which way you go about it just write 3 pages without stopping and you will uncover amazing things. Give it a try and check back for more details in a later post! In the mean time check out the expert and originator Julia Cameron’s blog for her explanation here.
Good luck with experimenting with these morning rituals! Hey does it hurt to give this all a try for one week? Please let me know how is goes!!
My first night was a whirlwind! I was SUPER tired but how could I just go to sleep?! Even though I hadn’t met with any friends I decided to head out on my own and hit the town!! I did meet a group early on, but quickly found out that most people in China do not like being on camera what so ever! SOOOOO in this video Im only going to show me to protect their privacy!
